Upon arrival at Mozes Kilangin International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel in Timika.

After lunch and some time to settle in, begin a relaxed introduction to the region with a half-day exploration of Timika.

Visit a local market where produce from the highlands and coastal lowlands comes together, offering an interesting first glimpse into the cultural diversity of Central Papua. Depending on arrival time and local conditions, continue through several areas of Timika to learn about the development of this frontier town and its role as one of the principal gateways to southern Papua.

The afternoon is deliberately kept light before the journey into Asmat the following morning.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the airport for the scheduled flight from Timika to Ewer, the principal air gateway to the Asmat region.

The change in landscape is dramatic. Mountains disappear and give way to an immense lowland world of rivers, mangrove forest, mudflats and swamp.

Upon arrival at Ewer, meet the local Asmat team and continue toward the river landing before travelling by motorized boat to Agats. Current journeys between Ewer and Agats typically continue by water, reflecting how fundamentally river transport shapes everyday life throughout the region.

Arrive in Agats, the administrative and cultural centre of Asmat, where much of the town stands above swampy ground and wooden walkways function almost like streets.

After lunch and check-in, begin a half-day cultural exploration.

Visit the Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress, an important introduction to the symbolism behind Asmat shields, drums, masks, ancestor figures and monumental bis poles. Rather than viewing these simply as decorative objects, your guide will explain their relationship with genealogy, ancestors, spiritual beliefs and community identity.

Continue on foot through Agats and, depending on local arrangements, meet an Asmat woodcarver or visit a small carving workshop. Observe how wood remains both an artistic medium and a way of preserving stories and identity.

The afternoon may also include Syuru and the traditional communities around Agats, providing an interesting transition between contemporary Asmat life and older cultural traditions.

Depart early this morning for the cultural heart of the journey.

Board a private motorized longboat and travel through Asmat's waterways toward Per Village, passing muddy rivers, mangrove channels and lowland forest on the journey toward the Arafura Sea.

The boat journey itself is part of the experience. In Asmat, rivers are not simply transportation corridors—they connect villages, hunting grounds, sago forests, fishing areas and generations of family relationships.

Per is known as one of the villages where visitors can gain a deeper understanding of traditional Asmat life, and existing expedition routes commonly combine the village with its longhouse, river environment and everyday subsistence activities.

Upon arrival, meet village representatives and spend time walking through the settlement.

Visit, where community permission allows, the traditional jew house, an important communal space historically associated with men, storytelling, carving, ceremonies and the transmission of knowledge between generations.

Meet local woodcarvers and learn how figures, shields and other objects are created. The intention is not merely to watch someone produce a souvenir, but to understand how carving connects people with lineage, mythology and ancestral memory.

Lunch will be served in or near the village.

During the afternoon, continue deeper into everyday Asmat life. Depending on tides, weather and community activities, experiences may include:

• travelling by traditional canoe along a smaller river or creek;
• seeing a sago forest and learning how sago has traditionally been harvested and processed;
• observing fishing or gathering activities;
• learning about traditional canoe construction;
• spending time with families and local artisans;
• hearing drums and traditional songs when naturally appropriate;
• discussing the meanings behind Asmat carvings, shields and ancestral representations.

If a genuine community ceremony, canoe event or gathering happens to coincide with the visit, guests may be invited to observe it. We deliberately avoid presenting ritual life as something that can simply be scheduled on demand.

Later in the afternoon, bid farewell to the community and travel by boat back toward Agats.

Arrive in Agats in the evening for dinner and rest.

After an early breakfast, leave Agats by motorized boat and travel back through the wetlands toward Ewer.

Continue to Ewer Airport for the scheduled flight to Timika. Current aviation information confirms Ewer–Timika as an operating air connection, although flight schedules in Papua should always be reconfirmed close to departure.

Upon arrival in Timika, meet your driver and transfer to the hotel.

The remainder of the afternoon is intentionally kept free for rest after the Asmat journey.

This overnight in Timika also provides an important logistical buffer before onward travel, as flights and boat movements in remote Papua can be affected by weather and operational conditions.

At the appropriate time, private transfer to Mozes Kilangin International Airport for your onward flight.

Your short journey through Asmat comes to an end, leaving behind not only memories of extraordinary woodcarving, but a deeper understanding of a culture in which river, forest, art and ancestors remain closely intertwined.
