Itinerary

Pangkalan Bun, Kumai & Tanjung Harapan

Day 1

Upon arrival at Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun, you will be warmly welcomed by your private English-speaking guide and transferred to the riverside town of Kumai, the main gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park.

At Kumai Harbor, board your private klotok, a traditional wooden riverboat that will become your floating home for the next three nights. Meet the captain and crew before beginning your journey along the Sekonyer River into the tropical landscapes of Tanjung Puting.

Lunch will be served on board as the klotok cruises slowly upstream. Keep watch along the riverbanks for macaques, proboscis monkeys, tropical birds, and other wildlife inhabiting the forest. Tanjung Puting is particularly renowned for its Bornean orangutans and rich primate and bird life.

In the afternoon, arrive at Tanjung Harapan, the first orangutan feeding station of the expedition. Follow a forest trail with your guide and ranger toward the feeding area, where you may observe orangutans emerging from the surrounding rainforest.

After the visit, return to the klotok and continue cruising slowly along the Sekonyer River. As evening approaches, watch for groups of proboscis monkeys gathering in trees along the riverbanks.

Dinner will be served on board.

Depending on weather and local conditions, an optional guided night walk may be arranged to discover nocturnal insects, frogs, spiders and other rainforest creatures.

Spend your first night aboard the klotok, surrounded by the sounds of the Bornean rainforest.

Pondok Tanggui & Camp Leakey

Day 2

Wake to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy breakfast on board as your klotok continues deeper into Tanjung Puting National Park.

Cruise to Pondok Tanggui, an important orangutan rehabilitation and feeding area. From the jetty, walk approximately 25 minutes through the forest to reach the feeding station. The morning feeding traditionally takes place around 09:00, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Observe the orangutans from a respectful distance while your guide explains their behaviour, forest habitat and the conservation efforts undertaken within Tanjung Puting.

Return to the klotok and continue upstream. As the boat enters the narrower tributary leading toward Camp Leakey, the water gradually changes to the distinctive dark colour characteristic of the forest waterways.

Lunch will be served on board before arriving at Camp Leakey, the best-known orangutan research and conservation site within Tanjung Puting National Park.

Walk along the forest boardwalk toward the information centre and continue through the rainforest to the feeding area. Camp Leakey was established in 1971 and remains closely associated with long-term orangutan research and conservation.

Spend time observing orangutans as they move through the trees and approach the feeding area. Mothers with young, juveniles and occasionally large adult males may be encountered, depending entirely on natural conditions.

Afterward, return to the klotok and cruise downstream at a relaxed pace while looking for additional wildlife.

As darkness falls, the boat will anchor in a peaceful section of the river, often near the nipa palm forest.

Dinner and overnight on board.

Rainforest Trekking, Hidden Waterways & Conservation

Day 3

Enjoy an early breakfast on board surrounded by the morning sounds of the rainforest.

Today offers a deeper exploration of the natural environment of Tanjung Puting National Park, beyond the main orangutan feeding stations.

Accompanied by your guide and local ranger, begin a longer forest trek from the Tanjung Harapan area. Walk beneath the tropical canopy while learning about rainforest ecology, medicinal plants, forest regeneration and the habitats used by orangutans and other wildlife.

The longer trekking route can take approximately four hours, depending on trail and weather conditions. At the end of the forest trail, a small canoe can be used to explore one of the quieter tributaries before returning to the klotok.

Lunch will be prepared and served on board.

In the afternoon, take part in a forest conservation experience, with the opportunity to plant a native tree in a designated rehabilitation area. This provides a simple but meaningful connection to ongoing efforts to restore and protect the forest ecosystem.

Later, return to the klotok and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Sekonyer River.

As the sun begins to set, watch the forest change with the evening light while proboscis monkeys and other primates gather near the river.

Depending on weather conditions, your final evening may also offer the chance to observe fireflies around the nipa palms, creating a memorable conclusion to your time in the rainforest.

Dinner and your final overnight stay aboard the klotok.

Day 4

Wake for your final morning on the Sekonyer River and enjoy breakfast on board while the klotok cruises slowly back toward Kumai.

Take in the peaceful river scenery one last time and keep watch for monkeys, birds and other wildlife along the forest edge.

Upon arrival at Kumai Harbor, bid farewell to your klotok captain and crew.

Your private vehicle will be waiting for the transfer to Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun for your onward flight, or to your selected hotel in Pangkalan Bun if you are extending your stay.

Departure arrangements will be adjusted according to your onward flight schedule.
