Journey Overview

Journey across Sulawesi on an immersive 10-day small group expedition linking dramatic karst landscapes, Toraja’s living ancestral traditions, the remote megaliths of the Bada Valley, Lake Poso, and the Bugis communities of Lake Tempe. Designed for culturally curious travellers, this journey reveals a deeper side of Sulawesi far beyond the usual routes.

Venture across the heart of Sulawesi on a carefully curated 10-day small group cultural expedition connecting some of the island’s most remarkable landscapes, archaeological sites, and living traditions.

Begin among the dramatic limestone formations of Rammang-Rammang Karst before travelling into the Toraja Highlands, where ancient cliff graves, traditional Tongkonan houses, megalithic monuments, mountain villages, and ancestral ceremonies reveal one of Indonesia’s most distinctive cultural landscapes.

Continue overland into Central Sulawesi, crossing remote mountain scenery toward Lake Poso and the secluded Bada Valley. Here, mysterious ancient megaliths stand among rice fields and rural settlements, offering a fascinating glimpse into a little-understood past. Experience simple local hospitality, explore the valley’s traditional communities, and visit the beautiful multi-tiered Saluopa Waterfall.

The expedition then turns south through Palopo to the Bugis heartland of Sengkang, where life around Lake Tempe remains closely connected to fishing traditions, floating houses, and lakeside communities, before concluding in Makassar.

Set more than 1,100 metres above sea level, the site offers expansive views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Explore its sacred caves, cliffside tombs, and hanging coffins while learning about the funeral traditions that remain deeply connected to Torajan identity. Lunch will be served at a carefully selected local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit Kete Kesu, one of Toraja’s most iconic traditional villages. Admire its beautifully preserved Tongkonan ancestral houses, distinctive curved roofs, ancient rice barns, and intricate wood carvings. Your guide will explain the cultural symbolism of the village and the important role of Tongkonan houses within Torajan society.

Continue toward the slopes of Mount Sesean and the panoramic highland area of Batutumonga. Here, spectacular rice terraces unfold across the mountainsides, surrounded by deep valleys, traditional settlements, and distant peaks. Enjoy an easy nature walk through picturesque rice fields and rural villages. Along the way, observe local farming activities, traditional houses, and the close relationship between the Torajan people and their land. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant overlooking the surrounding countryside.

In the afternoon, visit Loko Mata, an extraordinary ancient burial site where chambers have been carved into massive natural boulders. Return to your hotel for dinner and your final overnight stay in Toraja.

Optional Cultural Experience

Toraja funeral ceremonies are among Indonesia’s most remarkable living cultural traditions and may become a meaningful highlight of your journey. Should a ceremony take place during your stay, your guide will be pleased to arrange an opportunity for you to observe the ritual respectfully, subject to the permission and schedule of the host family. Visitors traditionally present a modest ceremonial gift, generally consisting of coffee, sugar, and cigarettes. The cost of this gift is not included in the tour price.

Depending on local schedules, a visit to Pasar Bolu, Toraja’s traditional livestock and produce market, may also be arranged.

Please note that funeral ceremonies are private community events. Their dates and locations are determined entirely by local families and cannot be guaranteed in advance.
